MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Dear All,
We are facing an issue with CAN communication of MPC20 with Volvo penta TAD1345VE engine....
If we select engine manufacture as “ Others, GM, IZUSU, CAT ” CAN communication is establishing, but engine is not Cranking….
If we select Volvo engine as the engine manufacture, then we can see CAN communication established, but its lasts only for a short period of 3 seconds…
It is found that the ECU source address of this particular Volvo Penta engine is ‘0’
Does it set any specific source address in the Volvo program in MPC20 to read only from there…!!!
I'm looking forward to your prompt response...

Hello akhilpauly,
My response to your questions will be in the PowerVision forum. The PowerVision forum has MPC20 and PowerVision information more closely related to your question than the CANCapture forum where you posted initially.
It is helpful to others to have the information in the appropriate forums.
Thank you for your help with this.

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Hello akhilpauly,
I apologize that we haven't been able to respond to your question sooner, unfortunately, your question came while the whole plant has been closed for the holiday. Boyce is still out, so I will try to help.
I have contacted our engineers who have experience with the Volvo engines, but unfortunately, the engineer with the most knowledge won't return until tomorrow, January 3. To help him though, would you please provide some more information.
It will be helpful to know if you are using the MPC20 standard configuration from PowerVision for Controllers with a list of the settings you have changed and the version of PowerVision for Controllers you used.
If you are using PowerVision Configuration Studio, it will help if we know the version used. Did the configuration originate with the version of PowerVision Configuration Studio or is it originally from a previous version of PowerVision Configuration Studio (what version?). Have you customized the configuration? If so, what changes have you made?
Thank you! Again, I apologize for a slow response, we will respond faster when everyone has returned from the holiday break. Thank you for your patience.

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
We Are using Power vision 2.8.10528 version for configuration...We didn't do any additional configuration for Volvo engine...just selected manufacture as Volvo...
There are two scenarios observed at the site, Please have a look at the below....
Scenario 1:
When we select the MPC20 to Volvo and when we try to press the start button it show CAN BUS failure with red indication.
When we select to others or caterpillar or ECU source to 0 the CAN communication is good and CAN is working but we are not able to start…
When we checked program of Mr. Nan it is showing the configurations of 70 and 71 serious of Volvo engine . Is that program is suitable for the current series of Volvo engine series 1345…
Scenario 2:
When we connect the Volvo panel to ECU and once when we connect MPC20 to the socket mounted on the Volvo panel for remote socket , the CAN is showing, but when we try to start the engine is getting stopped with same CAN bus failure/ speed lost failure ( it will crank only for 1-2 seconds ) and same scenario for key off to on panel start when we try start.

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Hi Sara,
I am having the exact same issue with a couple of TEC-10 controllers I sold into New Zealand.
Is there a working configuration that we can get our hands on?
Cheers Matt

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Hi Matt,
The person who really knows about this problem is out of the office until Wednesday or Thursday. :(
We think the problem has to do with the Volvo ECU sending xFFFF (invalid) for RPMs for a period of time when it comes up or attempts to start (like I said, I'm not the authority on the problem). This makes the TEC10 report a fault.
It is possible you could modify your config to hold off for 3-5 seconds to see if you can get it to run.
So, short answer, we don't have a config. I don't know what I'm doing and Nan who does know something will be back Wednesday or Thursday. If this is an emergency and you need something before then, let me know and we will dig deeper.
Regards,

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Hi Sara,
Thanks for the reply. I'd normally have no issue with having a crack at doing the update, but our customer is in New Zealand and he can't re-program locally. We'd prefer not sending controllers backward and forward with a chance that it doesn't work.
I might wait for a reply from Nan, before making a decision.
Hoping we can have an answer from him soon.
Regards Matt

Re: MPC20 not communicating with Volvo Engine
Here is the message from Nan:
I believe the question posted on the forum is the same person from Rajkot, I have solved their problems.
The reason the display not able to communicate with the Volvo engine, because that engine model is constantly broadcast engine speed with 0xFFFF when it’s not running. It cause the display to report fault and not able to start the engine.
You need to create a free form messages for engine speed 0xF004 , and use this message to allow/ignore the fault before the display detect any RPMs. See attached email.
Here is the attached email:
In the free form messages I created:
Then used in the followings:
This just to target on the knowing Volvo problem, for standard config, you may need to do it differently.
