GPS input to PV450/750

Post by mark.johns » Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:20 am

Has anyone interfaced a serial (USB/RS485) GPS unit into a PV display?

Trying to compete with new Faria engine monitoring c/w built in GPS.

I have looked at NMEA2000 but cost prohibitive on this project.

Hello mark.johns,

The USB port has support for file read/write and the RS485 has support for PVA gauges and modbus but I haven't seen a GPS unit that connects to them.

Do you have a GPS unit in mind so we could look at the specifications?

Thank you,

Doesn't looks like anyone has used it but our internal guys have used a few CAN based ones and had good luck. As long as you get reliable CAN messages from it with the lat/long it should be fine.

I don't but our Marine guys probably have lots of info. You might have Martin ping one of our marine guys for ya and see how they can help. There are a few things they have in-house to support GPS but not sure which are available and which aren't. I know marine configurations are pretty complex and the tools not fully documented so most are done in house under contract typically.

Hello all,

It was mentioned that your internal guys have used some CAN based GPS units? Could you tell me what units these where so I could also look into them.

Yes, we have and use GPS Receivers that communicate over CAN. See (http://www.econtrols.com/systems/marine) for a brief description and attached Datasheet for more detail. The Part#: e2209306A for orders.
